Construction of the buildings began in , and the first residents arrived in Apartments, retail facilities, and a few hotels are situated on the trunk.
Closely spaced villas line the long fronds, while most of the hotels and resorts are located on the crescent.
In the second decade of the 21st century, at least 10, people lived in Palm Jumeirah; some estimates were much higher.
Palm Jumeirah was intended to be the first of three similarly shaped offshore developments in Dubai.
The others, Palm Jebel Ali and Palm Deira, are both much larger than Palm Jumeirah but remain uncompleted because of economic uncertainty.
Also incomplete is the World, a grouping of artificial islands that is intended, upon completion, to resemble a map of the world. Print Cite.

You can do water sports, bike around the pretty little island or just enjoy the sea and sun on the comfortable sun beds. I love the eco friendly profile too!
Review collected in partnership with this hotel. Date of stay: March Helpful Share. Dear Valued Guest, Thank you for your kind words and your fantastic support!
It was a real pleasure to share our island with you. And on behalf of our entire Palm Island family, we are honored to have had you as our guests.
And we undoubtedly cant wait to see you again soon! Pointe Claire, Canada 36 contributions 44 helpful votes. We stayed at Palm from March The fact that you are "welcomed home" by the staff speaks volumes of the experience you get on the island.
I'm not just talking about the welcome at the dock when you arrive, but the arrival in the restaurant the 1st evening and staff you remember also remember you.
Even though the was our 3rd visit, it was the 1st time we met Katie. She had been on holiday the other two times.
We can't say enough about what a wonderful person she is. She is a effective manager who is loved by her staff. That fact is a real key to the pleasure of being there.
In my 1st review 6 years ago, I said "The staff will soothe your soul". Well the very same folks were there this time and they are still just as wonderful.
I will not name anyone since all are wonderful! On this visit we unfortunately had the underlying nagging fact of the spread of the coronavirus through the world.
Katie put in the best precautions she could by having staff do the serving at the buffet. Although people were aware of the crisis it was evident that the atmosphere did not get shattered as it could have.
There was empathy for all and this allowed us to basically just have fun and enjoy ourselves until we had to go home. Many folks were leaving early to get home if they could get the flights, others like us just stayed our regular time.
A week after we left, They had to close up shop. There are only 2 cases on the main island of St. Vincent and I hope it stays that way and does not spread to the other island.
These changes began attracting newer species of fishes and also reef formations. Precautions were also taken to prevent the process of liquifaction of the sand on the island below the upper surface.
This process of liquifaction was caused by the movement of the rocks and sand and also underwater erosion before and after construction.
A Vibro-compaction technique was used to prevent the process of liquifaction. The construction of the Palm islands along the coast of Dubai has caused several large environmental changes: a reduction in the area's aquatic life, erosion of the coastal soil, and irregular sediment transport along the shore.
There is also a dramatic change in wave patterns along the coast of Dubai due to the rock walls constructed around the palm islands: instead of hitting the shores directly, the waves move in an unusual manner around the new obstruction.
This has led to the weakening of the shores of Dubai. The origin of most of the environmental damage stems from disturbed sediment from construction of the Palm islands.
The sediment decreased the amount of sunlight filtering down to the sea vegetation and injured the surrounding marine fauna.
The World Wildlife Fund announced in , "[The] UAE's human pressure on global ecosystems its ecological footprint [is] the highest in the world. The country is supposedly at present five times more unsustainable than any other country" Samarai It also mentioned that the construction from the start up to date had caused many visible ecological and environmental changes that were a threat to the future.
To properly manage their shorelines and effects, Dubai relies on its coastal monitoring program. Established in , the Dubai coastal monitoring program began studying the baseline bathymetric measurement of depth of water in oceans or seas and topographic survey of the Jumeirah Dubai coastline.
Additional data were collected with technological improvements including remote video monitoring of Dubai beaches, sediment sampling and analysis, near shore directional wave and current recordings and intensive measurement exercises at selected locations using Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler ADCP equipment.
This way they were able to do a constant monitor and check on the continuously changing environmental conditions along the coast of Dubai.
